Food is one of the best preventive medicines, so take note!<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Follow a varied diet<\/strong> that doesn\u2019t leave out any of the different food groups,\u00a0since they all have a role to play and the nutrients they provide are vital for our\u00a0body to work at full potential. For example, carbohydrates and fats give us the\u00a0necessary energy for our vital functions and physical activity, proteins help build\u00a0our tissues, and minerals help regulate the body\u2019s functions.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Keep cholesterol at bay!<\/strong> Eat healthy, unsaturated fats, which you\u2019ll find in\u00a0foods like olive oil and nuts, rather than saturated fats (sausages, full-fat dairy\u00a0products, etc.) and as far as possible avoid trans fats (mass-produced baked\u00a0goods, margarine, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Don\u2019t skip meals<\/strong>. You should have a full, varied breakfast (with dairy products,\u00a0fruit or vegetables and cereals) to start the day firing on all cylinders. It\u2019s best to\u00a0eat carbohydrates at lunch (to avoid accumulating energy you\u2019re not going to\u00a0burn) and have a light dinner. And don\u2019t forget to have some fruit or yogurt as\u00a0mid-morning and afternoon snacks.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Add fibre to your diet<\/strong>. Don\u2019t forget to eat the recommended five pieces of fruit\u00a0and vegetables a day, as well as pulses and cereals. Fibre doesn\u2019t count as a\u00a0nutrient because it doesn\u2019t act in the body\u2019s internal processes, although it does\u00a0play a major role in digestion.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Drink water<\/strong>. Human beings need water to stay alive so we should drink water\u00a0regularly throughout the day, even before we feel thirsty.
