How to know whether fish is fresh or not

Obvious though it might sound, first and foremost fresh fish should smell of the sea. In addition, its skin should be firm and bright and its bulging eyes should have a shiny black pupil. If you get the chance to see them, red or dark pink gills are also a good sign.
